Please read the 21st Century P21 Skills paper. Develop and publish three thoughts prompted by the paper on relevancy to your practice. The thoughts can be random or structured, but must be prompted after reading the paper. You must also comment on one of your colleague's comments/postings, so check back later if there are none there yet (and get your original comments in early).
Combine your thoughts into one "shared document" and the skill I'd like you to develop is to present the thoughts using written, graphical, auditory, and/or visual media in your shared document. You will need to post your document to the class blog by implementing "share-->publish as web page" as an option of your document, then copying and pasting the document URL in your blog comment. That is, create a new document with your thoughts, publish the document to the web, then copy the URL of your document to the ASU EDU 591 comment area below this post - make sense???

If you email me yes, here's what you are committing to. Give me your email address at work, what grade level or content area you teach, whether you are an administrator, whatever. What school you are at and a short resume/introduction of yourself. I will leave your name and contact anonymous until I find another teacher/educator/administrator in PVUSD who might like to work with you on REACH, and in turn you with them. I will make an intitial email introduction of each of you to the other - from there, you are on your own to put into practice the communication, collaboration and creativity of 21st century teaching and learning, using information technology to bridge time and space constraints.
REACH (Real Experiences Advancing Childhood Humanities) is an initiative our district is implementing with other educators/administrators outside of our walls. We are connecting students/teachers/administrators, from differing classrooms, differing schools, cities, states, countries, using technology to communicate/collaborate/create in whatever ways possible and appropriate to postively impact student learning - totally up to you and your PVUSD counterpart on what you think would be useful - how big, how small, how deep, how thin, is up to you.
It does not have to be high tech, with tons of technology - in fact, the technology is not the point - learning with and about others is, being creative and taking a risk is the experience. One simple internet connection and a Google account can do wonders (you should now know that), to connect students, teachers, administrators, whatever. I suspect your kids, your school will be richer for the adventure and you will cross into something I believe is profound and necessary in education - REACH'ing beyond the walls......
So, if you want to REACH, give me the details and I will personally try to connect you with an appropriate counterpart. Then, you have the opportunity to extend your coursework learning into actual practice - the point of taking a class. Email me yay with details, or nay. What I wish for you is to REACH beyond this ASU class, throw optimism into the wind and see what emerges in your participatory networking experience.

Please note - I have accessed Q's documents, and because he shared it with me, I was able to add comments to his paper. I don't know if he shared it with the class, shared just to me, or shared to the world. But, if to the rest of you, I inserted my yellow sticky notes by the menus of Insert/Comment. Try it, I think it will put in the next commenter with a different color. This is a great way to have students submit "non-shared" papers and provide for teacher comments. But, it's even better for working on documents across space and time - cooperative/collaborative work yielding collective intelligence....;-)

I must say I rather liked that major point that P21 points out and am quite glad that we're on board with it. I laughed at the picture because I'm immature and thought: "Oh hey, the 21st century kid is Black." Honestly, though, that was a good picture.

I agree.. how can we meet ALL of our students needs when we HAVE to teach to the standards and move through them SOOO quickly. This reminded me of the mention of mastery in this article. I think we sometimes PUMP our kids full of so many standards and curriculum...they end up losing the concepts as a whole....! :)

Like the dog picture. Anyway, I agree with you and Nicole about the "Highly Qualify". Educators spend so much hours to be highly qualify and yet we have so much going on like standard, standardize testing and SEI...etc. How much time do we have to focus on students need?

Great thought. NCLB is a burden on teachers and administrative. However, the burden is more on the students. I has students last year quit the last 4 weeks of school because they found out that they did not passed the AIMS test and there is no point of going to school when you cannot get your high school diploma.

Evolution has a great impact on human being and we as teachers will have a great impact on our students on how we carry our lesson and educate them for the new century and the work force they will be facing. I agree that the learning is no longer restricted to books adn encyclopedias. It's new world and a new way of learning are evolving and I'm so glad to be part of the process.
