If you email me yes, here's what you are committing to. Give me your email address at work, what grade level or content area you teach, whether you are an administrator, whatever. What school you are at and a short resume/introduction of yourself. I will leave your name and contact anonymous until I find another teacher/educator/administrator in PVUSD who might like to work with you on REACH, and in turn you with them. I will make an intitial email introduction of each of you to the other - from there, you are on your own to put into practice the communication, collaboration and creativity of 21st century teaching and learning, using information technology to bridge time and space constraints.
REACH (Real Experiences Advancing Childhood Humanities) is an initiative our district is implementing with other educators/administrators outside of our walls. We are connecting students/teachers/administrators, from differing classrooms, differing schools, cities, states, countries, using technology to communicate/collaborate/create in whatever ways possible and appropriate to postively impact student learning - totally up to you and your PVUSD counterpart on what you think would be useful - how big, how small, how deep, how thin, is up to you.
It does not have to be high tech, with tons of technology - in fact, the technology is not the point - learning with and about others is, being creative and taking a risk is the experience. One simple internet connection and a Google account can do wonders (you should now know that), to connect students, teachers, administrators, whatever. I suspect your kids, your school will be richer for the adventure and you will cross into something I believe is profound and necessary in education - REACH'ing beyond the walls......
So, if you want to REACH, give me the details and I will personally try to connect you with an appropriate counterpart. Then, you have the opportunity to extend your coursework learning into actual practice - the point of taking a class. Email me yay with details, or nay. What I wish for you is to REACH beyond this ASU class, throw optimism into the wind and see what emerges in your participatory networking experience.

I believe you are correct. I have always believed as Americans we are the leaders in the latest trends and future norms. I think as we become more confident in these new technologies we as Americans will lead the way and the world will follow.
Motivation, either by excitement or fear, are both powerful. It is good that you're sensing both. Doing so provides a sense of urgency, which I think is appropriate given the state of the art with technology and the integration (or not) in K12 education.
I feel the same way. There is so much technology and advances that I don't know about. I figured all I can do as learn a little at a time... baby steps.
I feel like a small fish in a small pond now in term of technology. I only know what I need to teach and to survive in my little small world. I have so much to learn. I don't have a MYSPACE nor even want one. So many to learn in a short 24 hours. Sometime I wish I can retain information as fast as a computer save any document just in a few minutes.
I agree. There is so much out there that it is hard to be experts on everything. But as we use the technology it will become more and more comfortable, and the greatest teachers to us will be our students.
Andrea, I agree with you 100%! I think that grassroots videos will be extremely prevalent in the future. I think it is also important, like you said for teachers to really have time set aside for them to work with new technology and for them to have in-services where they not only learn how to use the technology but they have time set aside to create and collaborate.
Hopefully education can keep up with the flood of technology happening. I agree with Jeff's idea that we need to just do it! I'm trying to conceptualize how to incorporate grassroots video into my own classroom (have to get around the district blocking YouTube and Itunes...)
videos are excellent in the classroom if used in the right context. I completely agree with you.
I agree with you that grassroots video will be the most prevalent within the next 5 years. Currently though, the use of utube and Itunes u are blocked by district and marked forbidden. Getting around that barrier will be a first step in moving forward and implementing it.
I completely sympathize with being surprised about how many technological tools I'm not using.
