How confusing. Now I understand why my post wasn't posted.
Anyway, after posting about 5 posts on Saturday afternoon after coming back from my SEI class. That night, I went to a halloween party. I got home with a lot of thoughts about technology from my friends comments and "The Horizon Report." We were happen to talked about music that were playing on a cell phone, then one comment lead to another, the comment that I remembered the most was that from an engineer. His comment was that in a few years cell phone will be the most powerful tools because it has so many features and it might be even replace the "BIG" computer; cell phone probably be the technology equiment that we carry and use the most over computer. I thought a lot about "The Horizon Report" and how powerful technology are being used today, plus his comment really make me think that some day our students will be carrying cell phones instead of pens/pencils and papers and textbooks. Cell phone will be use just like "Flash Drive" nowaday. Cell phone probably have the same technological use like a "Flash Drive". One of the use of this new cell phone devices is to connect from cell phone to a printer through a bluetooth to print or sent information from one person to another. Students probably can also use the features (whatever it will be) to communicate or even class meeting, or conference with a class dicussion. For the next five years in education, probably "cell phone" will be a powerful tool for students. I'll call the "The Power of Cell Phone" trend in education.

Your assignment is optional - you will receive credit whether you email me yes or no, but you do have to email me. I do not believe in zeros, nor in failure as an option. However, you get what you put in, so I encourage you to say yes....;-)
If you email me yes, here's what you are committing to. Give me your email address at work, what grade level or content area you teach, whether you are an administrator, whatever. What school you are at and a short resume/introduction of yourself. I will leave your name and contact anonymous until I find another teacher/educator/administrator in PVUSD who might like to work with you on REACH, and in turn you with them. I will make an intitial email introduction of each of you to the other - from there, you are on your own to put into practice the communication, collaboration and creativity of 21st century teaching and learning, using information technology to bridge time and space constraints.
REACH (Real Experiences Advancing Childhood Humanities) is an initiative our district is implementing with other educators/administrators outside of our walls. We are connecting students/teachers/administrators, from differing classrooms, differing schools, cities, states, countries, using technology to communicate/collaborate/create in whatever ways possible and appropriate to postively impact student learning - totally up to you and your PVUSD counterpart on what you think would be useful - how big, how small, how deep, how thin, is up to you.
It does not have to be high tech, with tons of technology - in fact, the technology is not the point - learning with and about others is, being creative and taking a risk is the experience. One simple internet connection and a Google account can do wonders (you should now know that), to connect students, teachers, administrators, whatever. I suspect your kids, your school will be richer for the adventure and you will cross into something I believe is profound and necessary in education - REACH'ing beyond the walls......
So, if you want to REACH, give me the details and I will personally try to connect you with an appropriate counterpart. Then, you have the opportunity to extend your coursework learning into actual practice - the point of taking a class. Email me yay with details, or nay. What I wish for you is to REACH beyond this ASU class, throw optimism into the wind and see what emerges in your participatory networking experience.

It's amazing the advances cell phones have made! I can't imagine asking students to take out their phones...
Yes you can imagine it....just imagine it, then do it.....
Mobile access is huge, partly because of the increase in our ability to make devices better and smaller. The other big improvement is in what's called "mobile broadband". This is the technology to provide wireless access. Mobile broadband is increasing in capacity and speed. More current cell phones and definitely "smartphones" are embracing "3G" technology - bigger, better, faster wireless bandwidth. "WiMax" is starting to appear which is multiple mile (30?) access to wireless hot spots. Already some laptops are including WiMax cards in them. What is fascinating is that in Japan and Europe, mobile broadband is very popular and robust, considerably better than that in the U.S.. It comes down to U.S. Telco operators have land based connectivity and Europe built around wireless. So, the next 10 years will be interesting.
Wow! I agree. Cell phones are powerful technology that is affordable to most people. They are a great way for every to connect and share. It would be great to get the kids using their cell phones for learning purposes!
T.K., I agree. Cell phones are such a great technology piece. The technology that comes with a cell phone now is so much greater than even 5 years ago, so I can't wait to see what a powerful tool this will be in the future!
Perhaps we should be more seriously thinking about equipping each student with a cell phone with mobil broadband capability rather than laptops. What corporations or communication companies develope and sell mobil broadband?
I love my cell phone and use it in so many other ways than just a phone!
I use my phone as a modem, to beam songs, download my outlooks contacts, check email, send/receive text, take and send pictures, use GPS directions, alarm clock, personal and professional calendar of appointments and many, many more things.... and oh yeah, as a phone!
The cell phone has definitely come a long way not to mention all of the functions that exist on "current" models. It will be interesting to see what changes and/or integrations occur with these devices.
I have to say that I'm guilty of not using my cell phone to the fullest. This class has prompted me to at least try out and figure out the capacities of my cell phone. Whether I use them or not depends on how well those tools can replace my brain :-)
