The technological trend I feel will be most prevelant in K-12 learning in the next five years is collective intelligence. Websites such as wikipedia are becoming staples for research and our students are very adept at navigating the internet. In the next five years more bodies of knowledge that are continually added to will become more prevelant and our students will access these for their own use as well as create and contribute to collective intelligence.
Mobile broadband and social operating systems will also be on the rise in K-12 education, however I think that collective intelligence will rise as the fastest growing technology students manipulate. It requires only an internent connection whereas not every child is going to have a cell phone at school, nor will certain schools allow and embrace their use. Social operating systems exist now but it may be more than 5 years before our public school students all have their own academic profile they log into when they sit down in your class. Collective intelligence on the web is only going to grow and will be a resource our students utilize more often in the next 5 years.

If you email me yes, here's what you are committing to. Give me your email address at work, what grade level or content area you teach, whether you are an administrator, whatever. What school you are at and a short resume/introduction of yourself. I will leave your name and contact anonymous until I find another teacher/educator/administrator in PVUSD who might like to work with you on REACH, and in turn you with them. I will make an intitial email introduction of each of you to the other - from there, you are on your own to put into practice the communication, collaboration and creativity of 21st century teaching and learning, using information technology to bridge time and space constraints.
REACH (Real Experiences Advancing Childhood Humanities) is an initiative our district is implementing with other educators/administrators outside of our walls. We are connecting students/teachers/administrators, from differing classrooms, differing schools, cities, states, countries, using technology to communicate/collaborate/create in whatever ways possible and appropriate to postively impact student learning - totally up to you and your PVUSD counterpart on what you think would be useful - how big, how small, how deep, how thin, is up to you.
It does not have to be high tech, with tons of technology - in fact, the technology is not the point - learning with and about others is, being creative and taking a risk is the experience. One simple internet connection and a Google account can do wonders (you should now know that), to connect students, teachers, administrators, whatever. I suspect your kids, your school will be richer for the adventure and you will cross into something I believe is profound and necessary in education - REACH'ing beyond the walls......
So, if you want to REACH, give me the details and I will personally try to connect you with an appropriate counterpart. Then, you have the opportunity to extend your coursework learning into actual practice - the point of taking a class. Email me yay with details, or nay. What I wish for you is to REACH beyond this ASU class, throw optimism into the wind and see what emerges in your participatory networking experience.

This comment is to Christie B. Well said. I know when I assign projects I try to provide direction for the students when they begin their research and I always direct them to these collective learning websites such as wikipedia or ask jeeves. We are certainly moving towards easy access to large amounts of information at our fingertips.

Chrisite I love the idea that one day our students may have their own academic profiles to log in to. This would give them the chance to list their interests personally and academically and share them with other students around the world. Also based on their profile they may be tagged to certain collective websites.

I don't think just for the next five years, but rather technology is the next educational trend and as educators we will have be teaching that skills to our students because that's today powerful tools for any career, students will need to know technology and apply it in their profession.
Christie, Like I told Julie, its amazing all the information that is available to us. The hardest part I face is knowing where to go to find all the resources. I guess it just takes time to surf the net and collaborative with other teachers.
Absolutely!!! Technology with collective intelligences will only continue to grow.

Crisitie, I agree that collective intelligence will be widely used in education in the future. It will be such a powerful tool; but like you said, it may take a while to be implemented everywhere.
Christie, you articulate your position very well. It is hard to argue with it. We will take a look at Wikipedia later in the class and actually contribute to this "collective intelligence" (later assignment). But, through Open Education Resources, and the whole Creative Commons movement, collective intelligence is indeed growing, rapidly. Estimates suggest that technical information is doubling every two years and within 25 years will be doubling every 72 hours. However, let's be clear here. Information is information and that is growing beyond our wildest dreams. It remains to be seen whether our species will generate intelligence out of this growth in information. Biogenetics, nanotechnology and homeland security are the types of technological fields that may move faster and further than our ability to wield intelligence - but, I'm an optimist, so I believe we'll figure it out (if we teach the children well).....

I think collective intelligence will continue to grow leaps and bounds. It is a great way for students to collaborate and learn from, and even teach others. It is incredible to think about the amount of information out there. We just need to teach our kids the difference between trusted sights and non trusted sights to get their information from.
Interesting insight as to where we are heading with technology in our educational setting. It definitely is an area of continuous growth.
May we all eventually serve the Hive that is Humanity. And i mean that in a good way.
